This supports scalable development and commercialization of oral peptide, biologic, and low-permeability drug products.
August 24, 2026

Editor’s Take: According to Ashland, the launch comes at a critical juncture in oral peptide and biologics development.
Ashland launched Permexa (styled “permexa”) sodium caprate, a high-performance intestinal permeation enhancer. Its design supports scalable development and commercialization of oral peptide, biologic, and low-permeability drug products. These include glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists and, according to Ashland, related therapeutic pipelines.
Permexa combines the established functionality of sodium caprate with enhanced pharmaceutical processing performance. The excipient supports more robust tablet manufacturing via improved powder flow, enhanced compressibility, and greater formulation consistency.
The company says the launch comes amid “significant market momentum” in oral peptide and biologics development. Pharmaceutical companies are investing—heavily—in oral alternatives to injectable therapies. The reasons for this are simple: improved patient convenience, treatment adherence, and therapeutic opportunities.
At the same time, however, developers are facing numerous challenges from concept through to development and manufacturing. Permeability enhancement, formulation consistency, process robustness, and scalability are all considerations vying for space.
Ashland says the Permexa launch, then, is a response to strong interest from global pharmaceutical developers. The company engaged with several pharma, biotech, and CDMO organizations prior to launch, reviewing sampling, technical evaluations, and sales projections.
“Ashland is not stopping here,” company Life Sciences strategy director Caroline Cooreman said. “We have developed a multi-stage strategy to support the pharmaceutical market with essential excipients for the oral delivery of biologics. We have multiple additional products in the pipeline and recognize important synergies with our vinyl pyrrolidone and derivatives portfolio.”
Also weighing in, Alessandra Faccin, Ashland senior vice president and general manager, Life Sciences.
“Rapid growth of oral peptide development is creating demand for excipients that support biological performance and pharmaceutical manufacturability,” Faccin said. “Permexa sodium caprate was engineered to help customers address complex challenges and move more confidently from formulation through commercialization.”
Overall, Ashland considers Permexa a solution not only designed for laboratory success, but also for real-world development and manufacturing environments.
